Would you drive a Mini-Cooper with run-flat tires up to Lake Tahoe in the winter?
I don’t have all-terrain tires for my Mini but want to go up to Tahoe in a couple of weeks. Highway 80 is usually kept really clear. Would you drive it without winter tires in a car as low as the Mini? I also don’t know if my car takes chains because of how low to the ground it is. Do you think it’s a safe drive as long as it’s not snowing?
Answer
Donner Pass is a little over 7000′ in elevation. You may want to see what it’s like before you go. Also check the weather around Lake Tahoe on the highways that take you the rest of the way. Those are high elevations and we’re having a lot of snow this winter on the west coast.
You can manage with any kind of tires as long as you have chains. Chains are a (expletive deleted) to put on, and they’ll last about 10-20 miles before they start breaking on the pavement and slapping the side of your car.
If you don’t have chains, you may want to consider La Jolla beach in San Diego.
