The Benefits of Cheap Used Tires

In the state of today’s economy, the cost of a new set of tires can be unbearable.  However, cheap used tires are available for your needs and can offer you numerous benefits.  First, cheap used tires are affordable.  Because they are used, they are significantly less expensive than new tires.  Second, they can offer you almost as much tire life as a new set, when you purchase from a reputable tire reseller.  What should you look for in a set of cheap used tires?  What makes a viable option for your needs, as opposed to a poor choice?

First, you must look for several things in the tires, themselves. When choose to make use of used tires, it is important that you visually inspect each tire, or shop only with a trusted reseller.  What should you look for in your inspection?  You should note several important areas, including:

Tread – The tread area of the tire is the part that comes into contact with the road surface.  Tread depth (the amount of tread remaining on the tire) is an important factor.  Tread depth is measured in millimeters, and there should be at least 50% of the tread remaining. In addition, inspect the tread for any unusual wear patterns, such as lower tread in the center, cupping on the edges or significant edge wear.  These can cause vibrations and even reduce the lifespan of your new tires.

Sidewalls – The sidewall of the tire is the part that extends from the top of the shoulder to the bead (the band in the center that seals the tire to the wheel).  Inspect the sidewall for any damage, including cuts, nicks and “burn” marks.  If a tire has been run flat, it will have a dark ring on the sidewall; inspecting the inside of the tire usually reveals a weak area running the circumference of the tire, where the rubber has been worn away.  Deep cuts in the sidewall can pose a safety hazard, as well.

The Bead – The bead is one of the most important areas of the tire.  This is where the tire meets the wheel and any damage to the bead can cause the tire to go flat.  Inspect the bead area for any nicks, cuts or other damage.  The area should be free of damage and debris; if not, reject the tire for another one that is not damaged.
