    the angle doesn’t really matter. you can tell by the noise it makes. if you don’t hear anything then you’re doing it right.

    It should be angled UP at about a 45 degree angle or higher. Press the gauge firmly against the valve until you hear no air escaping then remove it without jolting the gauge and note the reading.

    If the gauge is pointing downward, the mass of the gauge scale (the stick in the middle with the numbers) will develop kinetic energy and tend to overshoot, giving you a false reading.

    You do it the same on a car as on a bicycle. Look at the end of the gauge that contacts the tyre valve. See the flat rubber ring? it needs to rest flat on the top of the tyre valve. It doesn’t matter what you call the angle, just make sure they are flat together. If you can hear a hissing sound, you don’t have a good seal yet. You must have a seal to get an accurate reading.
