Q&A: Is walking the best exercise?

Question by Leon M: Is walking the best exercise?

I live in Georgia, so I pretty much have to do all my errands by car, which means I get little exercise.
But I kickbox and run probably 6 miles per week and kickbox 3-4 times per week for 45 minutes per session.
I find it really hard to lose the “spare tire” around my waist.
I recently visited Prague and spent 6 days purely walking around, like about 5-6 miles per day.
Plus this is weird I was eating lots of bread, dark black beer, I even one day had lard on bread, mcdonalds and other unhealthy fatty carb foods.
When I got back to America I had lost 5 pounds!! With litle effort to lose weight.
So is walking 6 miles per day the key to staying healthy and losing weight?
If so then I will cancel my gym membership and walk in the park.

It is a good exercise. I walk to control my weight. I also ride a bike. It works if you do it every day. Walking 6 miles per day will take about 2 hours.

From what I’ve heard, walking is best for losing weight while runing is best for cardiovascular health.

if you didnt kickbox or anything in Prague then its possible you lost muscle, which could account for at least some of the weight

Chances are you weren’t eating processed foods (except the Mcdonalds) and the beer is full of good things for you when taken in moderation. The atmosphere is different and relaxing and your stress level is less when on vacation.

Walking helps, but not the key, you really need to focus on your nutrition. That is they key, you are doing enough exercise. Good work!!

it depends on the person I think doctors recomend it because it is easy to do and work into a schedule.

Walking is just a beneficial as running from a weight loss perspective. I have been told its the distance that matters not the speed. But running is better for cardio. As far as the best exercise, that would be swimming. No other exercise can work as many muscle groups as thoroughly in as short a time span as a few good laps in a pool.

Walking is a good exercise, but it’s not the best exercise for trying to loose your “spare tire”. Kickboxing is also a good work out, but it’s not enough. You need to find a workout routine that actually targets your problem areas. If you want to start out light try a couple sets of squats. It targets more than one area including your mid section. As a three year georgia resident I’ve had to hit the gym as well. My car has got me feeling a little lazy. The most walking i do is from the parking space into the walmart and even then your looking for the closest parking space available.

Go back and re-read your question.

You went from running roughly a mile a day plus a little kickboxing to walking 6 miles a day.

That’s a drastic increase in activity. Its not that walking is better or worse, its that you did so much more of it. Its the total miles that count.
