Yes, but you don’t have to get an alignment every time you get new tires.

Improper wheel alignment can cause three basic problems: irregular tire wear, handling problems and crooked steering wheel.

Wheel & Tire Alignment

For those of you that are like me & don’t really know that much about cars, your wheel alignment is an alteration that your local auto shop can do for you. It consists of calibrating your tires so that way when you drive, they don’t wobble to the left or tilt to the right… unless you steer it, of course. When wheels are properly aligned, it allows the driver to have better control when steering & permits the tires to wear evenly. If wheels aren’t aligned right, then you might have some major problems on your hands.

Wheel alignment can easily be messed up. Let’s say you’re driving a little too carelessly, you hit a curb & then you damage your brand new 2008 Toyota Camry Wheels ; or you hit one of those pieces of cement that’s put in front of you in some parking lots; that can easily make your alignment a little off. Once you accidentally hit one of those objects while you’re driving, the orientation of your wheel can become somewhat off-center. If you’re a typical person like me who doesn’t really take the time to observe if a little bump messed up the alignment or not, I won’t be able to tell with my naked eye; but if I take it to a tire shop or a regular auto body store, they’ll most likely be able to tell pretty soon-sooner than you at least.

If a wheel happens to be “unaligned”, you’d be able to tell pretty soon. The tire that’s off-center is the one that’s making your car slant to the right or the left. Let me give you an example, if I was making a right turn at a stop sign & my right front tire hit the curb, then when I drive on the freeway, my car would be slanting the the left because the wheel was pushed to the left. I’d have to constantly sustain a right-pull on the steering wheel since it’d be drifting to the left. If I don’t fix it as soon as I notice it, it’d cause for the tire to wear faster than the other ones & have a HUGE repercussion on my gas mileage. I have a V6 Toyota 4 Runner so you know I’m going to be worried about my gas.

When a tire shop notices that the tread wear is uneven, they can tell that you’ve been driving your car for a while without fixing the alignment. Most of the time, the innermost part of the tire tread will become smooth & there’d be an abundant amount of tread left on the external part, or the other way around. If this happens, you’re tires would probably last for a shorter amount of time & you may have to spend more money to replace that tire.

If you’re totally & completely worried that you may have to get your wheels aligned again, you shouldn’t be worried; it should take about an hour, if not less. When you get this done, the price usually covers the rotation of your wheel; which should help your tires wear evenly… unless you’re going to hit another curb or something. If you have a Four-Wheel drive vehicle, the shop may want to rotate all four tires even if you just need your front ones fixed. You may want to start calling for quotes, how long it usually takes, & if they rotate all four tires on your car, or just the front ones.

Here are some simple maintenance tips that you can follow to help prolong the life of your car, and help save you money. Notice where you park your car and get into the habit of looking to see if there are any leaks when you pull out. This can be very tricky in a public garage with lots of stains from leaks from other cars, but if your car is leaking any type of fluid, transmission, radiator or brake the leak will look “fresh”. If you see any fluid leaking have your car serviced as soon as possible.

Keep an eye on your tires. When you have your oil changed every 3,000 miles have your tires rotated. At this time the technician will inspect your tires for any wear. Keep your tires aligned. Check your tire pressure once every month. It’s easy enough to read tire gauges and they even have electronic ones. Keeping your tires properly inflated helps increase gas mileage too.

As mentioned above, change your oil at least every 3,000 miles. The oil is the life blood of your car and keeping fresh oil in your car can extends it’s life by many, many miles. At this time the technician will check your air filter, hoses and belts. Keep your windshield washer reservoir full and carry an extra gallon with you. You don’t want to be caught without washer fluid, and you don’t realize how quickly you use it up, especially in the winter months when we get salt spray on the windshield. Replace your wiper blades once a year.

Change the air filter every 15,000 miles. A clean air filter improves the fuel economy of your car. A dirty air filter can cause the engine to run rough and stall. At this time you should also check the pads and shoes on your brake system. Check the brake fluid and top it of, as needed. The fluid should be clear. If you notice noise when the brakes are applied or the steering wheel shakes or vibrates, this can be an indication that the brakes need replacing. In this case, don’t wait check the brakes and replace as needed. Following these simples steps can go a long way in prolonging the life of your car.

lol…they do steer just like any car and do get out of wack

  2. Dj4Resa says:

Yes they have alignment adjustments. but if the old tires were wearing even there’s no reason to get an alignment

  3. Francis H says:

the best is 4 wheel alignment

  4. Iknowthisone says:

Absolutely. And it’s every bit as important to keep your front drive vehicle aligned as it was your rear drive vehicle. If you are having tire wear problems or any kind of unwanted problems like a pull to one side or if you have hit a curb or large potholes in the road it’s a good idea to have it checked and since your buying new tires the investment you make in new tires would be well served by having your alignment checked.

  5. Gabriel says:

Yes!! You can go to any alignment shop and have it done. You can also have a 4 wheel alignment as well recommend when you buy tires you get it aligned at the same time. (personal preference) Have a good day:)

  6. Jay P says:

Of course there is. Any wheel can be out of alignment, regardless if the vehicle is a FWD, RWD or AWD/4×4.

While it is not absolutely necessary to get an alignment when buying tires, it is a good idea to help get the most of your new tires. Especially if the old tires show signs of irregular wear ( wearing faster on the inside or outside of the tire ).
