Question by Rick: Is a tire that has been repaired using a “plug” reliable?
I recently had a found a screw in a new (less than 1000 miles) tire. I took the car in to have the tire “patched” only to find that they used a “quick plug” instead of a internal patch. Is this a reliable repair?

To start with, it’s more effective for you if you have your Used Auto Tires that are All-Season Tires. These are the tires that are made to offer you respectable performance throughout different climate conditions. Most of these tires are on mainly all vehicles that are sold today; but even if it does or doesn’t come standard, you should still know what form of tires that you have on your car & make sure that you can recognize the pros & cons from the tire. This info can generally be found in the user manual that comes in the glove compartment of your vehicle, or on the internet, or even if you speak to the people that work at the dealership or the shop that you get your car from.
On top of that, the tire pressure of your new & Used Tires is incredibly important. You should be sure that you check it in fall & in the beginning of the heavy & freezing winter weather months. One more thing that you should fully understand is that your Used Auto Tires can only do so much to keep you protected on the road that you’re driving on. When the wintertime time comes, you need to modify your driving habits; this includes driving slower, improving your stopping distance, and knowing that you need to adjust to the temperatures, the temperatures doesn’t adjust to the way that you drive.

i have always used plugs and have done them myself, i have found it to be very reliable for many thousands of miles, but if you specifically paid for a patch, i would bring it back and get what you paid for. mechanics that i have learned from have told me a patch is stronger then a plug.
you only live once. why gamble with your live. tires are needed to protect you and your passengers, and love ones. don’t trust a patch or a quick repair. and no they are not reliable. not in my book.
Yes – very – as long as the repair is done ONLY in the tread area and NOT in the sidewall.
The new plugs are excellent quality, ( the old ones were rubber and deteriorated quickly).
A patch has to be installed carefully and by an experienced repairman. The area to be patched must be prepared and cleaned adequately, to provide a secure bond between the patch and tire casing but, even then they can come loose, especially, if the tire is operated at low pressure.
Plugs are completely fine as long as they are used in the tread area. The only differnece between a patch and a plug is whether they took the tire off the rim. A patch just has a backing that is glued in place. Probably a little better repair, but I’ve drove thousands of miles on a plug before.
