Question by Broken: I am getting underpaid and used at work!!!!?
I’ve been at my job for two and a half years. From the beginning I was very hard working and exceeded all expectations. I became the top performer even though I was only part time because I’m going to college. At the time the manager (who I thought was awesome… THOUGHT!!) was Vietnamese and she was promoting nothing but Asian people. Another guy (Chinese) who started at the exact same time as me got a promotion within 6 months (I guess cause he became full time), but I was focused in school so it didn’t bother me too much. The supervisor got fired and a Filipino got promoted to that position, then another Vietnamese girl also got promoted. The manager begged me to become full time and I did because I needed the money but I had work crazy schedules like 7am-6:30pm and go to school at the same time. The manager, even though I was still the top performer only gave me a 20 cent raise!!! Ridiculous! She made promises she never came through with. Well, when the Chinese guy quit and I was hoping she would give me the promotion she claimed that the position was completely removed by the market. I got so tired of all the BS that I decided to transfer but when I told her about she quickly claimed she was wrong and that the position was mine but before she could come through with it she got fired. The Vietnamese girl got fired too.
We got a new manager who promised me all the same stuff and I thought she would actually be different and that she did care. I was wrong! I guess all managers really only look out for themselves. She did promote me but in exchange I had to change my school schedule and I had to miss school once per week. And the raise she gave me was mediocre. I should have been getting that pay with the position I had before getting promoted just for being there two years! I wasn’t going to take the promo when they made that offer but she promised that in three months she would pay me what I wanted. I ended up doing horrible that semester in school and never got my raise. I decided it wasn’t worth it and gave up the position to go back to my old one, she was stressing me out asking too much from me when she wasn’t paying me enough.
Well, I found out a few weeks ago that the company raised the minimum pay for brand new associates and the pay was more than what I had been getting paid with the stupid promotion! I was extremely upset!!! New associates with no experience whatsoever were getting paid more than what I was getting paid with my so called “promotion”. I got used big time!!!
Well the manager talked to us about a week after that not knowing that I new the pay for the new associates (I wasn’t supposed to know that). She claimed that because I went back to part time what would regularly happen was for me to get a pay cut, but that not only was she not going to do that, she was also going to give me a raise. When she said this I (so naive) imagined I would get raised above what new associates were making since I have been there for more than two years, I still have supervisor authority and access to everything I had access to with my promotion. To my surprise she said “she was raising me” to what I was told new associates were making! I was furious but I couldn’t do anything about since I wasn’t supposed to know in the first place and it is a code of ethics violation to talk about salaries. I guess it would have been better if she would have just told me that the company was raising everyone, but for her to lie to me telling me that she was the one who was giving me a “raise”? What a biotch!!!! I felt like she was trying to manipulate me by making me think she was the one giving me the raise so that I could feel like I owe her something. What a hypocrite!!! I’m so tired of this job but the only reason I have stayed is because of the customers and my coworkers are like family to me!
Is there any suggestions to how I can approach the manager to get the pay I deserve without getting in trouble? Or should I just quit and get another job! I used to really love my job and I am very good at what I do but right now I feel extremely disappointed. I get along really well with the Assistant Manager and the supervisor and I would hate to leave them … I don’t know what to do! Sorry if this is sooooo long but I just had to get my anger out!!!!!
the reason I mentioned nationalities is because I wanted to point out that the old manager was a bit racist by only promoting Asian people! It was not a coincidence, and I am not complaining about it. I’m only pointing out how unfair they were that after I worked so hard and actually cared about the job they didn’t even pay me what I was supposed to be getting paid. And then the manager lied about her “giving me a raise” when it was a company thing. And no she did not work with my school schedule which is why I didn’t continue with the position. The girl who had the position before me was able to be off two full days to dedicate to school but when it came to me they made me miss school!

find a new job and then put in your notice……….
you obviously have a higher opinion of yourself then your employer does.
the employer has not done anything illegal and they have gone above and beyond to work around your school schedule and do what they can for you.
you want to be part-time because school is important but at the same time you want the full-time pay and promotions, then when you get what you want you can not do the job and school so you complain and go back to part-time. your school/education is important and should be your first priority……….don’t blame the employer for your choices. if you are not happy with the way you are treated then move on, if you are not going to move on then quit bitchin…..
and what relevance is there in mentioning the nationalities of the other employees?
