Question by Escape: HELP! Wheel bearings question?!?
I’m in autos basics and the other night in class my teacher and I changed the radius arm bushings out on my truck. When we unbolted the shock and a spring, the whole wheel and tire just kinda like moved. I can’t really explain it. And the teacher said, “WOW! You’re wheel bearings are loose. No big deal. You can get em repacked.” I thought no biggie. We put the new bushings on and that took like 2 hrs, and then he told me, “Yeah…you should probably get an alignment ASAP just to not wear your tires.” So….being the paranoid person I am…I took it in today to a mechanic I know from church (and where my truck got tuned up in april to the tune of $ 700). I was quoted $ 51 for the alignment. I could live with that.
Well…about an hour later he calls and tells me the bearings are loose (no duh). They have to be repacked in order to align the truck. To the tune of $ 230.
I was stuck….basically….I bought my Bronco with my life savings. I’m 18.It’s my first car. It’s not that my parents don’t have money…they would just rather I spend my own, and then they can play god and tell me where and when I’m allowed to drive my own vehicle. Also….basically I pay for gas, repairs ect or hang myself. They don’t help with dinero. I checked my bank account and have enough work and birthday money to cover it. Barely. So, I okay’ed it. Now…I’m sitting here wondering…MECHANICS! IS IT REALLY NECESSARY TO REPACK THE BEARINGS IN ORDER TO ALIGN IT…OR DID I JUST GET TAKEN?

Specialized Stores For Pets
Children are thrilled when parents bring an adopted pet home but some might wonder where they found him. Many animals in the world do not have a regualr home and are made available for adoption to the public through specialized pet stores. These stores consider every pet adoption as a way of giving back to the community because the animals are not running the streets or being mangled under a set of car tires. These pets have been rescued and cared for using products that are sold at the specialized pet stores.
Some pet owners did not plan to adopt a pet when they entered the specialized pet stores. Since many pets are housed in these buildings, some pet owners were shopping for items for other animals, or to find a friend for a fish that was waiting in an aquarium back home. These specialized pet stores do not press adoptions on anyone but only provide a viewing room for people to visit with them if they want to. As shoppers are searching for animal toys, they might glance over and see a pet sleeping the afternoon away.
Specialized pet stores give pet owners the chance to fall in love all over again. Some pet relationships start from one little stare and after an hour of visiting with a pet, they realize that there are other places that they have to be. The visual image of that pet in a cage might linger with the shopper for hours. Most will just make it up the street in the car before they realize that the pet they saw will be coming home with them that night. Specialized pet stores have a knack of putting people and animals together so that they are a perfect match.
There are many useful services available through specialized pet stores that will ensure animals are always happy and healthy. Pet owners can call and make an appointment for a grooming and take home an animal that looks as good as the top models that are strutting on television. Dogs will know they look good after a clipping, and some pet owners are amazed not to hear nail clicking on the tiles when they go to pick them up. That is one of the other services that are offered by specialized pet stores because pets have nails that need clipping regularly.
A specialized pet store is a great place to take pets to do shopping for the things they need. Pet owners can find grooming services and accessories that will keep coats healthy and free of tangles throughout the week. The specialized pet stores sell a variety of bedding that will suit animals of all sizes and breeds. Shopping at a specialized pet store could take hours due to the variety of pet products on the shelves. Pet owners can find supplies for cat, birds, dogs, and ferrets, as well as fish, lizards, gerbils and snakes.
Pet owners can also find plenty of toys for every animal in the house to enjoy. Pets that are kept amused are less likely to cause damage to the interior walls and furniture. Outdoor furniture is given a nod but dogs will usually prefer to lay in their own cube that is located in a shady spot in the back yard. Pets no longer have to stress about space because those that are well cared for are welcome in all areas of the home so that they have access to people that they enjoy visiting on any day of the week.

For a four wheel drive thats not to bad as far as price goes.
Hopefully your bearings are allright if they were that loose who knows what kind of shape the race’s are in.
No you did not get taken. Yes it was necessary to repack the bearings for an alignment. An alignment is to make the tires point straight down the road. If you have loose wheel bearings, you may as well not get it aligned at all, because the wheels would be pointing wherever they wanted to at the time.
Yes the bearings have to be in proper working order. If they are loose, then the weight of the vehicle throws off the camber.
So far you’ve been told the truth by two different people. It’s impossible to set the toe-angle during an alignment if the front wheels are wandering all over the place because of loose front wheel bearings. If your Bronco is *not four wheel drive, $ 230 is AGDS (Awful ** Steep) to repack and adjust front wheel bearings. Why don’t you save a ton of money and sweet talk the auto mechanics teacher into showing and helping you pull this easy job off?
It’s also necessary to reset the alignment anyway after changing front suspension bushings. Kill two corrective action birds with one stone before getting it aligned.
I’d say–yes, and yes. Yes, the wheels can’t be loose if you want to have it aligned and yes, that seems excessive to me. But if the bearings were that loose they needed to be replaced, not merely “packed”. Packing is simply cleaning out the old grease and kneading new grease into the bearings, but if the wheels are loose then the bearings went dry and wore down.
