Have i damaged my eye from looking through a dslr viewfinder with a 300mm lens pointed directly at the sun?

Question by Sondre Blablablabla: Have i damaged my eye from looking through a dslr viewfinder with a 300mm lens pointed directly at the sun?

I took about 10 pictures(i’d say i stared at the sun at about 15 sec. or maybe less in total) of the sun at about 3 o’ clock with a clear blue sky and a very intense sunlight. I used a 300mm zoom lens fully zoomed and pointed it directly at the sun while looking through the viewfinder. I dont know if the aperture i used has any meaning but i used f32(small opening) and Shutter 4000s, have i damaged my eye(retina) and/or the camera? (The images seem a little bit more noisy, but maybe that’s just my imagination.) After the shots i felt the eye i used saw everything in a greenish light for a few minutes. but since then i havent thought about it till i got home from the trip and researched it. if i close one eye, each of them seem just as good, only that the eye i used feels a little “tired” and and a tiny bit blurry at some times(maybe just imagining) what do you guys think?

You probably burned your cornea. Its not such a good idea to stare at the sun, let along through an optic lens of some kind. Galileo made some of the earliest observations on the sun through a telescope and went blind shortly after.

  1. BD says:

The f-number and shutter shouldn’t make a difference in this. If you only looked at the sun for about 15 seconds, don’t sweat it. This isn’t enough time to cause solar retinopathy or ultraviolet keratitis. You just hyper-excited (bleached) the photoreceptors in you eye, which distorted your color perception for a few minutes.

Don’t sweat it right now, but don’t make a habit of doing that. The viewfinder lens could potentially focus the sunlight more intensely on your retina. A digital camera might be a better option for a photo-op such as this.
