Need expert help buying tires for my Dodge Intrepid.?
I recently bought a used 1998 Dodge Intrepid ES, 3.2L. It requires P225/60R16 97T. Current tires: front: 98H champiro 128, treadwear 45E, traction A, temperature B, M+S, DOT(something). Rear: 97T, Touring AS Doral, M+S, treadwear 52e A, B. Apparently they need to be changed because the reading gives 6, 5, 4 and 3 on them (the recommended is 5 30 or 5.5).
Not sure why one seller would be better than another, and not sure why one brand will be better than another. There are so many tires with different warranties and other things, and since I don’t know much about tires, I don’t know which will be the best investment. I have looked into pep boys, sams club, sears, tires plus, and a small auto repair shop. Not sure where to go.
I am looking for good all weather tires, especially for snow, since I am in Minnesota. Driving about 1.5 hours daily at about 60mph. Can’t afford expensive tires.
Thanks for your help.
What kind of warranty are we talking about? I noticed pep boys saying 60000 miles warranty on some tires.
Answer
well if basically boils down to what u want out of ur tires…….if u want to purchase a warranty…walmart or sears or good year will b ur best bet because those are everywere u go…..so u wont get stuck having to buy more tires and trying to get reimbursed…which wont happen…..
if u dont need a warranty and ur looking for lowest price go get estimates from walmart/pepboys tehn take it to smaller tire shop and they will beat it and then some in most cases…..
as far as teh numbers u quoted 97T and 98H are speed ratings…..
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=35
as for the numbers 6,5,4,3……those are most likely the tread depths left on each of ur tires……2 which is 2/32nds is the legal minimum…..and in snowy areas u want at least a 5…….
so basically if money is a major issue u can get away with leaving the tires that were 6,5 on ur car and just replace the ones that read 4,3……
but its best to replace them all
btw new tires usually read in the 11/32nd to 13/32nd range for car tires and up to 15/32 for truck tires….
as for brands u just need to get an all season tire which is what most dealers keep on there shelf….good luck
